Instagram started with the intention of posting instant photos for people across the world. Who knew it will one day become so big that apart from promoting photographs, people will be promoting themselves too for instant dating.
With its wide reach, Instagram is one of the world’s most popular social media app today. As per last year, Instagram had 800 million monthly and 500 million daily active users. While there is nothing wrong with people meeting on Instagram and feeling the connection gradually, the issue is when people message and start asking personal question even before they know the name of the person they are talking to. They straight away want to know about the marital status, location and other such personal question. It can be a bit unnerving.
Recently, I have been exposed to this side of Instagram and Facebook too. For someone who very rarely put personal pictures, it was quite shocking to receive such message. It just means that people don’t really care about the other person, it’s a matter of taking a chance wherever possible.
What is more worrying is the fact that sometimes people don’t even careabout compatibility, age etc before approaching and then don’t buzz off evenwhen told the facts.
And this got me thinking why people are switching to social media instead of regular dating app which are set up for precisely this purpose. And this is what I found –
- One of the biggest reasons is the wide reach and easy access to people across the globe today through their profiles and business pages.
- In today’s times of Digital Marketing, Social Media is used for promoting businesses and people aim to get more followers, views and hits. Also, a person’s personality is not of concern till they show it in bad light.
- The easy access to people with age no bar, sex no bar, intellect too no bar, on digital platform has this downside.
- People don’t think twice before professing their interest, physical or emotional, because its still easy to create fake accounts and not be caught. Though cyber security is on rise, but still has a long way to go.
Going by the statistics, the online dating scenario doesn’t seem to be going anywhere except rising and in fact be spreading across mediums for it. All we can hope for is that people show some patience before jumping the gun otherwise some of the genuine relationships too may die even before an opportunity to be kindled.
